Ter-Petrosyan’s Official Visit to Washington (Part III)

On these days in 1994 Levon Ter-Petrosyan continues meetings in the USA. An interesting episode from the White House reception; Clinton had a hoarse voice and the Opening speech was made by Hilary Clinton, because Bill simply could not talk.

The next day the president meets with the Secretary of Defence Perry and on the same day Ter-Petrosyan in his residence, which is the reception house for the private guests of the US president, meets with United States Director of Central Intelligence James Woolsey at 9:45 p.m. In the visit schedule of the president this meeting is marked with a pencil that’s why I’m using “secret meeting” term although it was planned.

Woolsey doesn’t remember the details of the meeting (I have asked), the only hope is Ter-Petrosyan to tell what Woolsey expected to get from Ter-Petrosyan in Syria connected with the activities of the representative of Armenian community, who was a threat to US security not only in Syria but in the whole Middle East  (it turns out I know quite a lot). According to my information no interpreter participated in the meeting. Levon Ter-Petrosyan is the only possessor of the historic information.

On the same day earlier the president meets with the US Secretary of State Warren Christopher to discuss the Nagorno Karabakh issue. Minister of Foreign Affairs Papazian, Armenian Ambassador to the US Ruben Shugaryan, the US Ambassador to Armenia Harry Gilmore, the Co-Chair of the Minsk Group, ambassador Joe Pressel, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the U.N Madeleine Albright were present at the meeting. On the same day Ter-Petrosyan visits Carnegie Foundation to meet with some politicians, journalists and experts.

The next day- on August 11, President Levon Ter-Petrosyan meets potential investors, a number of state officials and press representatives in a reception organized by The Overseas Private Investment Corporation in Washington. On August 11 Ter-Petrosyan has a meeting in the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Senate members ask president questions about Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as concerning Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Russian relations and the Assistance provided by the USA.

Thanks to Vahram Kazhoyan for the exclusive photos, and Papazian, Shugarian and Arzumanyan for providing the information.
